I found lip gloss in his car. And I gave him a chance to explain himself, I really did.
I wasn’t acting crazy—seriously, I kept my cool.
“Girl, I’ll call you back,” I said, because I needed to talk to him directly.
He showed up with flowers.
“Babe, I brought you some roses,” he said.
“Thank you,” I replied, still guarded.
He apologized. “I’m sorry about the other day. I just want to be honest with you and keep it real.”
He said he thought about it and realized the lip gloss belonged to Nina.
“But it’s not what you think,” he insisted.
So I asked, “If it’s not what I think, then why was she in your car? What was she doing there, Lawrence?”
He started explaining: “I left work, and I saw Nina looking for her car keys. I asked if she was okay, and she said she needed a ride. I agreed at first, but then I thought, ‘Wait, I should probably talk to my girl before I give another woman a ride.’ So I called her a tow truck instead. She must’ve left her lip gloss in my car when she got out. I didn’t even realize it until later.”
I looked at him and said, “Lawrence, listen. I don’t have a problem with trusting you. If I didn’t trust you, I wouldn’t be with you. But I don’t trust her. She’s sneaky, and I can tell she’s into you.”
“And you want me to believe she couldn’t find her keys… but still got into her car? In Buckhead? A Black woman in Atlanta, driving a Mercedes-Benz, just leaves her car unlocked? That makes no sense.”
He looked flustered. “I know it sounds wild, but that’s what happened.”
“Then how did she even have time to put on lip gloss? You didn’t even give her a ride. Something’s not adding up. And regardless of what you say, her behavior is off. I don’t like it, and I don’t like how she disrespected me.”
“Either you set some boundaries with her, or there’s going to be an issue. She was rude to me. She lied and said you weren’t at work. She hung up on me. And now this?”
Lawrence shook his head. “I’m in the middle of a big deal. She’s actually really good at her job—I’ve never worked with anyone more efficient. But I agree, we need boundaries.”
I looked at him and said, “You’re telling me you can’t replace her, but you expect me to drop everything if it were someone from my past? That’s not fair. I’ve been through this before, and I’m not going down the same road.”
“I’m not cheating on you,” he said. “I promise.”
“Then bring the flowers in,” I said softly, “before they die.”
