The tension in the apartment was thick enough to cut with a knife. Shayla stood by the window, arms crossed, her eyes flickering with pain and frustration. Anthony sat at the edge of the couch, rubbing his forehead, torn between his past and present.
Shayla had held it in for weeks—watching Anthony drift away emotionally, caught between his unresolved feelings for Amber and his attempts to build a future with her. But today was the breaking point.
“Say it, Anthony,” she said sharply, turning around to face him. “Say her name again. You’ve been whispering it in your sleep. I’m not blind.”
Anthony looked up, startled. “Shayla, it’s not like that. You know what me and Amber had—”
“Had?” she cut in, raising an eyebrow. “Or still have?”
He fell silent. His hesitation was louder than any answer.
Shayla stepped forward, her voice trembling but firm. “I’ve tried, Anthony. I’ve swallowed my pride, stayed quiet, helped raise Kai like he was my own, and made space for your healing. But I’m not going to be second to a ghost anymore.”
Anthony stood now, his voice soft. “Shayla, you and Kai are everything to me.”
“Then prove it,” she snapped. “Because I won’t raise this boy in a home where love is divided. I need a partner who’s fully here, not one lost in memories of his ex.”
There was a long silence. Shayla looked him in the eyes, her voice calm now but full of finality.
“If you can’t forget Amber—if you're not ready to move on from her completely—then I’ll pack our things. Me and Kai will leave. And I won't come back this time.”
Anthony felt his chest tighten. He looked at Shayla—this woman who had been there through his darkest days, who tried to love him when he couldn’t love himself. And now, she was giving him a choice.
Tears welled up in his eyes.
“I don’t want to lose you,” he whispered.
Shayla held his gaze. “Then don’t. But you can’t keep living in two worlds. It’s time to choose.”
And just like that, everything changed.
