Words spoken in school hallways can echo louder than any shout—especially when they follow a child home.
Behind the Price Tags
1. Laughter That Cut Deep
It started at school, the place where Destiny already tried her hardest to blend in. That day, a group of girls gathered near her desk, their laughter sharp and careless. They pointed at her clothes, whispering loudly enough for her to hear.
“Your clothes are always the worst,” one girl sneered. “You look dirty… like you don’t even care.”
Destiny lowered her eyes, heat rushing to her face. She said nothing—but the silence hurt more than any reply. By the time she reached home, her shoulders felt heavier than her schoolbag.
2. Brooke’s Anger, Sharra’s Concern
Brooke noticed immediately. Destiny’s forced smile, the way she avoided mirrors—it all told a story. When Destiny finally spoke, her voice broke.
“They said my clothes are ugly,” Destiny whispered. “They said I look dirty.”
Brooke’s heart clenched. Anger flared—not at Destiny, but at the cruelty of children who didn’t understand how words could scar.
Without wasting time, Brooke called Sharra—her mama—her voice trembling with frustration.
“We need to do something,” Brooke said firmly. “Destiny deserves better. She needs new clothes—confidence.”
Sharra didn’t hesitate. She promised she would speak to Larry herself.
3. A Decision That Everyone Heard
That evening, Sharra approached Larry gently, explaining everything—what happened at school, how deeply it affected Destiny.
“Larry, please,” Sharra said. “Let’s take Destiny shopping. This isn’t about fashion—it’s about her heart.”
Brooke supported her without hesitation, adding her own plea. Larry listened quietly, his expression thoughtful. Finally, he nodded.
“Alright,” Larry said. “We’ll take her shopping. She shouldn’t feel less than anyone.”
From the hallway, Bethany heard every word. Surprisingly, she didn’t react with anger this time. Instead, a slow, unreadable smile crossed her face.
“That’s fine,” Bethany said calmly as she entered the room. “Go shopping for Destiny. I’ll come too—I need a few things.”
4. Counting More Than Clothes
The mall buzzed with life. Destiny stayed close to Brooke, nervous at first, then slowly warming up as she tried on new outfits. Each smile she gave felt like a small victory.
Larry paid without complaint—dresses, shoes, jackets—wanting Destiny to feel safe and proud. Brooke watched with relief, Sharra with gratitude.
Bethany, however, watched something else entirely.
She noticed every price tag. Every swipe of the card. Every bag added.
“So this is how easily he spends on them,” she thought. “On his ex-wife’s family… and her children.” Her expression stayed pleasant, but her thoughts grew sharper.
5. After the Bags Were Set Down
Back home, Destiny thanked everyone, her eyes shining for the first time in days.
“I feel better,” she said softly. “Maybe school won’t be so bad now.”
Brooke hugged her, though a quiet unease lingered in her chest. She noticed Bethany watching— calculating, waiting.
Later that night, Bethany approached Larry when the house grew quiet.
“You know,” Bethany said evenly, “you spend a lot on your ex-wife’s relatives… and their kids.”
“But on me?” she continued, her tone tightening. “Hardly anything. Why is that?”
Larry froze, unprepared for the accusation. The room felt colder.
Bethany wasn’t just asking a question—she was opening a door to conflict she had already planned.
From the hallway, Brooke overheard fragments of the conversation, her chest tightening.
Destiny stood behind her, confusion clouding her face.
The shopping meant to heal had planted something darker—
and by morning, the cost would be far more than money.
