Sometimes it’s not the secret that breaks you — it’s what the secret bought.

THE QUESTION

INT. LIVING ROOM – NIGHT. The house is quiet. Too quiet.

BETHANY: Why is Sharra’s house bigger than ours?

Larry looks up from his phone, caught off guard.

LARRY: What?

THE COMPARISON

BETHANY: Why does she get a bigger house when we’re paying part of her rent?

LARRY: Bethany, not this again.

BETHANY: No. This time exactly this. Explain it to me. Slowly.

BETHANY: Her house looks like a dream. Ours looks like a compromise.

THE REALIZATION

BETHANY: Comfortable? While my ex-wife lives in luxury on our money?

LARRY: We are not doing this tonight.

BETHANY: Oh, we are. Because tonight I finally understand something.

BETHANY: You’ll never give me what you gave her.

THE DECISION

Bethany walks to the bedroom, opens the closet, yanks out a suitcase.

LARRY: What are you doing?

BETHANY: I’m packing.

BETHANY: I know you’re never going to buy me a house as big as Sharra’s.

BETHANY: So I’ve made a decision.

CROSSING LINES

BETHANY: I’m going to Sharra’s house.

LARRY: You’re joking.

BETHANY: Does this look like a joke?

BETHANY: It’s big. It’s beautiful. And you made sure she was comfortable.

BETHANY: Neither this house — nor your choices — were ever really mine.

THE EXIT

BETHANY: I finally see where I stand.

LARRY: If you walk out that door, things will change.

BETHANY: They already have.

Bethany opens the door, suitcase in hand, cold night air rushing in.

BETHANY: Funny thing, Larry… you always said size doesn’t matter.

BETHANY: Tonight, it tells me everything.

The door stays open. Larry doesn’t move. And whatever comes next won’t stay contained inside that house.
