“After taking $650 from Newman, Sharra taunts Larry by saying, ‘I don’t need your $650.’”

The Price of Pride

Opening Scene

A small café on a rainy evening. The neon sign outside flickers through the window. A quiet tension hangs in the air.

Sharra sits alone at a corner table, stirring her coffee slowly. Her face is calm, but her eyes carry the weight of many unsaid things.

Newman walks in, shaking rain from his coat. He spots her and approaches.

NEWMAN

You picked a dramatic night for this meeting.

SHARRA

It’s just rain, Newman. Nothing dramatic about it.

Newman sits down across from her and studies her face.

NEWMAN

You said it was urgent.

SHARRA

I need six hundred and fifty dollars.

NEWMAN

Straight to the point. No small talk tonight?

SHARRA

No.

Newman reaches into his coat and pulls out his wallet.

He counts the bills slowly while the rain taps against the window.

NEWMAN

Six hundred and fifty.

He places the money on the table.

SHARRA

Thank you.

Larry Arrives

The café door suddenly opens. Larry walks in and freezes when he sees them together.

He slowly approaches the table.

LARRY

Well… this is unexpected.

SHARRA

Hello, Larry.

LARRY

I didn’t know you two had meetings.

NEWMAN

Just helping a friend.

LARRY

Helping with what?

SHARRA

With something that doesn’t concern you.

Larry notices the bag in Sharra’s hand.

LARRY

Did he just give you money?

Larry pulls out a stack of cash and places it on the table.

LARRY

Here. Six hundred and fifty dollars. Take it.

The Confrontation

Sharra looks at the money and calmly shakes her head.

SHARRA

I don’t need it.

LARRY

You asked people for money today.

SHARRA

Yes.

LARRY

Then take it.

SHARRA

I said I don’t need your six hundred and fifty dollars.

The café becomes silent.

LARRY

But you took his?

SHARRA

Yes.

LARRY

Why?

SHARRA

Because his money doesn’t come with chains.

LARRY

Chains?

SHARRA

Every time you help someone, you make them feel like they owe you their life.

SHARRA

That’s not help, Larry. That’s control.

Final Moment

Sharra picks up her coat.

LARRY

You’d rather take money from him?

SHARRA

Yes.

LARRY

That’s unbelievable.

SHARRA

No, Larry. What’s unbelievable is that you still don’t understand the difference.

She walks toward the door.

SHARRA

Keep your $650. I don’t need it.

She leaves into the rain.

Larry stands silently beside the untouched money.

Newman quietly sips his coffee.

Outside, the rain keeps falling.
